Monolith Docs vs LibreOffice

Monolith Docs vs LibreOffice

LibreOffice is one of the most successful open-source projects in the world — a fully featured desktop office suite (Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, Math) maintained by The Document Foundation, free for anyone to download, with no vendor lock-in and full data sovereignty. For an individual or organization that wants free desktop software and either does not need cloud collaboration or has the IT capacity to self-host it, LibreOffice is genuinely capable. The catch for trades businesses: there is no cloud SaaS from The Document Foundation. Real-time collaboration requires self-hosting LibreOffice Online or paying for Collabora Online (with your own infrastructure). Mobile editing requires Collabora Office. There is no CRM integration of any kind. No email, no calendar, no team chat, no AI features in the core product. Monolith Docs is a hosted cloud document suite — full real-time collaboration, mobile, native CRM integration, AI included — without IT setup.

Where LibreOffice wins

Free and open source

LibreOffice desktop is free for anyone to download and use, on any platform, for any purpose. No subscription, no per-user pricing, no licensing audits. For individuals or organizations that need office productivity at zero software cost, this is unmatched.

Full data sovereignty and no vendor lock-in

Files live on your hardware in open formats (ODF). You own the data and control where it lives. For organizations with strict sovereignty requirements — government, regulated industries, or anyone wary of cloud lock-in — LibreOffice plus self-hosted collaboration is a defensible architecture.

Native ODF and broad cross-platform support

LibreOffice is the reference implementation of the OpenDocument Format and runs natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux (rpm and deb). The same suite, the same files, on any platform.

Includes Base (database) and Math (equations)

The desktop suite ships with a database tool (Base) and an equation editor (Math) alongside the standard word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation apps. Useful for users with database or technical-document needs.

Scripting via Basic, Python, and Java

The UNO API lets developers automate LibreOffice with Basic (VBA-like), Python, Java, or C++. For a technical user willing to script, the customization surface is deep and well-documented.

Where Monolith wins

Cloud collaboration without self-hosting a server

LibreOffice has no real-time collaboration in the desktop suite. Cloud collaboration requires LibreOffice Online (you self-host) or Collabora Online (you still self-host, plus pay €3+/user/month for support). You set up Linux, Docker, Nextcloud or a similar host platform, and maintain it. Monolith Docs is hosted SaaS — open a browser, share a document, edit together. No server to install, no host platform to maintain.

Native CRM integration, not custom scripting

LibreOffice has no CRM integration in any variant. To pull customer data into a quote you script the UNO API in Basic or Python, or export CRM data to a CSV first and use Mail Merge. Monolith Docs is part of the Monolith Platform — templates pull merge fields directly from CRM accounts, contacts, work orders, and invoices natively.

Document generation from CRM records

Generate proposals, invoices, work orders, inspection reports with photos, and contracts directly from CRM data. LibreOffice can do bulk PDF conversion via headless command line if you script it, but there is no built-in document automation product.

Mobile editing without paying Collabora

The Document Foundation only ships a viewer-only LibreOffice for Android. Real mobile editing is delivered by Collabora Office on iOS and Android — a commercial product separate from the desktop suite. Monolith Docs is mobile-ready out of the box.

AI capabilities included

LibreOffice has no AI features in the core product. AI is delivered exclusively via community extensions like LibreThinker, localwriter, or LibreOffice AI Copilot — third-party, individually installed, not enterprise-grade. Monolith ships AI capabilities as part of the platform.

Legally compliant e-signatures workflow

LibreOffice supports cryptographic digital signatures on PDF and ODF files — useful, but not the send/sign/track workflow trades businesses need for proposals and contracts. Monolith provides legally compliant e-signatures with audit trail, tamper-evident records, and signer verification — built into the platform.

Built for trades document workflows

Inspection reports with embedded photos, maintenance contracts, scopes of work, handover packets — Monolith Docs is built to generate the documents a trades business actually produces, with templates tuned for the workflow. LibreOffice gives you a generic word processor and a community template repository.

One platform with CRM, Connect, and Docs

Monolith Docs lives alongside Monolith CRM and Monolith Connect on one platform — one login, one bill, one customer record, native data sharing. LibreOffice plus a separate trades CRM means assembling the stack yourself, including the file storage, sharing, and CRM integration layer.

No IT setup required

LibreOffice's free desktop suite is genuinely free, but a real team deployment with cloud collaboration requires Linux server expertise, Nextcloud or another host platform, ongoing security updates, backups, and user provisioning. Monolith Docs is SaaS — sign up, log in, edit. The IT cost LibreOffice externalizes is the cost we absorb so you don't have to.

Pricing

LibreOffice desktop is FREE and open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 — no subscription, no per-user pricing, no licensing audits. The Document Foundation does not offer a hosted cloud SaaS — there is no LibreOffice equivalent of Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 you can simply sign up for. Cloud collaboration requires either self-hosting LibreOffice Online (free, but you provide the server, host platform like Nextcloud, security updates, and backups) or subscribing to Collabora Online: free Development Edition for testing/personal use, Business plan at €3 per user per month (about $3.40 USD) for up to 99 users with on-premise hosting and SLA support, Enterprise plan custom-quoted for 100+ users. You still host the server yourself; Collabora does not sell SaaS hosting directly. Mobile editing is delivered via Collabora Office, a commercial product separate from desktop LibreOffice. There is no CRM integration in any variant, no AI in the core product, no email/calendar/chat bundle, and no managed e-signature workflow — those gaps are by design (LibreOffice is a desktop office suite, not a productivity platform). Monolith Docs is part of the Monolith Platform — a hosted SaaS document suite with native CRM integration, real-time collaboration without IT setup, mobile editing, AI included, and document workflows built for trades. Beta pricing is being finalized with customers and will be published openly before any billing begins.
